Overdentures

Sunday, January 23rd, 2011

They are supported dentures dental partial dentures are used in very small, ie when the patient has left few teeth in the mouth. The status of these teeth determines, in most cases, success or failure of this treatment, so periodic checks should be made for cleaning thereof and to detect the existence of possible decay.

The patient’s mucous membranes will be cleaned daily with a soft brush and hygiene in overdenture will be held in the same manner as for removable full dentures.

Natural teeth are brushed with a normal toothbrush, interdental brush (to clean the space between teeth) and / or dental floss, depending on the construction of the abutment teeth and possibilities of the patient.

When mechanical cleaning is inadequate is also used chlorhexidine rinse or fluoride gel and gel on the pillars and brushing.

Plaque and Scale

Thursday, January 20th, 2011

Plaque is one of the most common problems that attack the teeth. Rather than being an aesthetic problem can become a serious health problem that damages the teeth, because if not removed can cause inflammation of the gums, bleeding of the same, bad breath and even tooth loss. The scale is also called calculus or tartar, and no more than a layer formed by the mixture of food debris, minerals, cellular debris and millions of bacteria that are gradually adhering to the teeth due to lack of hygiene appropriate.

Plaque tends to accumulate in the inner faces of the teeth (or lingual) anterior. It is recognized as being of a hard, irregular, brown, and feeling bitter mouth, as well as halitosis or bad breath.

Dental plaque is not removed from the outer surfaces of the teeth hardens and becomes tartar. When he acceded to the teeth, is avoided only through a painless procedure performed by a specialist, known as tartectomía.

To prevent tartar to use good brushing technique, using a mouthwash 2 times a day and floss or dental floss.

Toothbrushes should be small and soft, rounded bristles, allowing access to all corners of the teeth. Should be changed every 2 or 3 months, using a floured toothpaste, dental floss, eating sugary products, and visit the dentist every 2 or 3 months.

Dental plaque and pigmentation produced by microbial plaque, can change dramatically the appearance of the teeth and cause health problems.

To prevent accumulation of bacteria in the mouth, which have also been associated with systemic diseases and digestive problems, is essential to maintain proper hygienic care of the teeth.

Papaya-based Product Removes Decay

Monday, January 17th, 2011

The gel softens tooth decay by facilitating the removal of it without the use of mechanical methods. A product made from papaya, particularly the variety called “Arequipa”, can remove tooth decay without the use of mechanical methods. The product was launched in the city of Arequipa, thanks to research conducted at the Interdisciplinary Center for Research and Innovation (CICA) of the Universidad Católica de Santa María (UCSM), in southern Peru.

Renova Gel Caries is the name of the new product which, according to researchers, providing dental caries softens the removal of the same with the use of manual techniques, decreasing in most cases the use of the turbine, local anesthesia, the fear and anxiety caused by visiting the dentist.

“Renova Caries” is sold through pharmacies and a dental laboratory, university sources said that created it.

Experts say that papaya contains a substance called papain, a proteolytic enzyme, which has bactericidal, bacteriostatic and anti-inflammatory and contributes to the degradation and removal of caries.

Dr. Zaida Moya, who was in charge of the investigation, said the Arequipa papaya contains papain, a proteolytic enzyme (Carica pubescens) whose processing results in a dental material that allows the softening of dental caries. Dr. Moya met the local properties of this product during the course of his doctoral thesis.

Peruvian scientists began their research on applications of the papaya Arequipa in 2006 and concluded earlier this month, after winning the cooperation of the company Quimivet SRL and co-financing from the Fund for Innovation, Science and Technology (FINCyT), an organization that manages funds from the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB).

The cost of the new product already on sale is 36 soles, and allows an average of 20 applications.

Dry Mouth Increased Cavity

Friday, January 14th, 2011
People with reduced salivary flow, characterized by “dry mouth” are more likely to have dental caries compared with those with higher salivary flow, clinical specialists have warned Vital Dent.Saliva plays a role natural defense against cavities, as it dilutes and removes the sugars and constant pH of the mouth, they said. “Thanks to its alkaline pH and buffer capacity, dragging the remains of food left in the mouth, neutralizes acids produced by plaque and contributes to the teeth the calcium and phosphate needed in a process called remineralization,” said the dentist for Vital Dent Clinics, Olga Prieto.

“In addition, saliva acts as a reservoir for the fluoride, which helps reduce tooth decay, is responsible for assisting the process of chewing and digesting food, and also protects the inner surface of the mouth and teeth” added. Age, sex, number of teeth, dehydration, mouth breathing or psychological aspects such as stress can reduce the flow of the salivary glands.

This variation is also often the result of “systemic diseases that cause progressive destruction of the salivary glands most notably dementia or taking certain medications,” said Dr. Prieto.

The flow rate to enjoy good oral health is about 1 to 3 ml of saliva per minute, according to Vital Dent clinics in a statement. “If the amount of saliva is greater than usual, there is a feeling of constant drooling can cause erosive lesions on the lips or the skin of the face,” he said.

On the contrary, if the amount of saliva decreases (hyposalivation) affects “severely” to oral health because it produces the sensation of “dry mouth” or xerostomia, which leads to trouble swallowing, speaking and eating, and even wearing dentures . It can also cause pain and irritation in the mucosa and burning sensation on the tongue, said medical specialists.

Diseases Affect Our Teeth

Tuesday, November 23rd, 2010
We all recognize the importance of keeping our mouths clean and neat, but mostly we spent time and care, so at any stage of life from birth, through adult, oral hygiene is important to prevent diseases that can be painful and lead to loss of teeth.

Among the best known oral disease, highlight:

Decay, which is the progressive deterioration and destruction of teeth by the action of acids that are generating some microorganisms living in the mouth. Many times by too much sweets.
Granuloma, also often called a dental abscess, and is a process in which dead cells accumulate and causing a severe bacterial infection, which must be addressed immediately by the dentist.Furthermore tooth sensitivity, also considered an oral disease, causes pain, either versus cold drinks or foods, as well as against the hot, acidic, sweet, and this is because the bottom of the tooth called root is exposed, by inflammation of the gums.
When there is any inflammation of the gums is always necessary to consult, because gingivitis is one of them, and makes the gums bleed often and sore to the touch, which in its most advanced periods is called periodontal disease, when the infection has attacked the ligaments and bones supporting the teeth, causing them to deteriorate.

Tips to Prevent Gum Disease in Diabetic

Thursday, November 11th, 2010

Among the 2.5 million Hispanics in the United States who have diabetes (1), many are surprised to learn about an unexpected complication associated with this condition: gum disease.According to the Centers for Disease Control, there is an increased prevalence of gum disease among diabetics, a disease that disproportionately affects Hispanics in the United States.

A national survey of tests, Mexican Americans are almost twice as likely as white non-Hispanics that a doctor diagnosed diabetes.

And among Hispanics, the prevalence rates of diabetes are quite high of 8.2% for Cubans, 11.9% for Mexican Americans, and 12.6% for Puerto Ricans.

A recent study shows that people with diabetes are twice as likely to develop gum disease than people without diabetes. This increased risk is due to a decreased ability to fight bacteria that invade the gums, causing that diabetics are more susceptible to bacterial infection.

New research also suggests that the association between serious gum disease and diabetes is a two-way relationship. Not only diabetics are more susceptible to gum disease, but gum disease may have the potential to affect the control of glucose in the blood and contribute to the progression of diabetes.

Under the Awareness Month Diabetes, November, primary care providers and dentists across the country are telling their patients the association between oral health and diabetes and the importance of good oral health as part overall control of diabetes.

“In general, there is less awareness among diabetics and Hispanic communities of the link between oral health and the short-and long-term can have a successful and comprehensive plan for diabetes control,” said Dr. Victor Rodriguez DDS, president of the Hispanic Dental Association.“This link is particularly important to Hispanics, as the bacteria associated with gum disease may be influenced further by the diabetes. Several studies on the effect of diabetes on periodontal disease have found that diabetes can weaken the connective tissue around the gums and cause various adverse effects in the mouth, and salivary gland dysfunction, ulcers, infections and dental caries. ”

Diabetes patients can combat the risk of gum disease and other oral health problems picking his teeth with flossing, visiting the dentist regularly and brushing the teeth daily with antibacterial toothpaste like Colgate Total ®. Unlike regular toothpaste, toothpaste, Colgate Total ® reduces germs that cause gingivitis, an early form of gum disease, 90%, compared to regular toothpaste with fluoride, 12 hours after brushing teeth. Also, toothpaste is the only FDA-approved * to prevent gingivitis and highly recommended by most dentists to care for the gums.

Month In recognition of Diabetes Awareness, toothpaste, Colgate Total ® offers the following recommendations for maintaining good oral hygiene:

* Check your blood sugar: If the level of blood glucose is poorly controlled, is more likely to contract a severe gum disease than people who are inadequately controlled glucose levels in blood
* Floss at least once a day: Flossing removes plaque between teeth and under the gumline
* Brush teeth at least twice daily and use an antibacterial toothpaste: It has been shown that smoking reduces germs that cause gum disease
* Schedule regular dental cleanings: Visit your dentist at least twice a year for professional cleanings and remind them to have diabetes, oral care should be part of your overall diabetes control to ensure that gum disease does not cause increased blood sugar, making it difficult to control diabetes
* Look for early signs of gum disease: Communicate with your dentist any signs of gum disease include redness, swelling and bleeding gums.

Orthodontic for Bruxism Patients

Wednesday, September 1st, 2010

Bruxism is a very common dental parafunction. Therefore it is common for adult patients ask “what will happen to me when wearing braces.”

Bruxism interferes not relevant to orthodontics. In fact, more than a third of adult patients we refer to be bruxism.

These patients may have sensitive teeth, something that does not occur when appliances are not kept. This is because the teeth with minimal change of position devices, almost continuously, especially in the early stages of treatment. These small changes in position are recorded by the receivers that can send a pain signal to the nervous system.

In dysfunction syndrome temporomandibular joint sounds are common. Patients are referred to as clicking. They are caused mainly by the interference of the articular disc that is slipped-out of its usual place. Exceptionally, there may be a lock to reduce: the mouth is open or closed for a few minutes, the patient gradually recovered after joint function. Although it may alarm the patient is of no consequence: the articular disc has been filed in the path of the joint in a different way than usual, blocking it temporarily.

Become a Better Student of Orthodontics

Saturday, August 28th, 2010
Many new students will soon begin orthodontic courses (others have already started), many are new expectations of them all, many want to study and learn what for them (and us) is the specialty of their dreams: orthodontics . However sometimes those expectations and dreams are not enough, sometimes you need a radical change of attitude in order to survive (2 or 3 years depending on) the graduate orthodontics. Then I leave a list of 10 points that I would have liked to have had when I started post-graduate students are not more than the accumulation of errors made and analyzed in order to be better, but many times our ego prevents us from seeing potentialized that need to be better have the feet on the ground:Respect your teachers: Never, ever dare to underestimate your teachers in both clinical and other materials. This troglodyte attitude of “if-were-so-good-to-make-class-giving” is nothing more that you enter the road to failure as a student. They are there for love of art, no one is there to become a millionaire, give us their time, expertise, tips and tricks for how to avoid making the same mistakes as them. Pay attention, they forge big part of your approach as an orthodontist. Learn everything you can about them, you will never have the opportunity to have on hand many orthodontists (with different ideas) to be able to question so much as a student. Give them the place they deserve. Remember that when the student is ready then the teacher came.

Respect your peers: Another of the big mistakes as a student, is thinking that the rest of your teammates are not smart enough like you. Never underestimate them, you have no idea the amount of life experiences for all and that they can help your training as an orthodontist. Discusses the advantages that accept your mistakes and thank your partners make you see at the end of account ….

Respect your patients: Our first orthodontic patients are taken in the clinics of the graduate. Thank them and conviction on you, and put all your energy in each of the appointments that you will have with them. Again, each of these dates are a real treasure and discovery experience for you. Respect the time of your patients. Remember that when you come to your clinic schedule leaves all the problems out, your mind must be focused 100% on your patients and in the information your teachers give you. Never, ever dare to show your frustrations in front of them, remember that the trust they give us is hard to win but easy to lose.

Do not stay with any questions: Question everything you do not understand, so why are your teachers. Never be understood if there is any doubt. If you get too much pain to do in class (what if I think my teammates a lot of questions?) As fast and finish the class Ask your teacher. The same both in the classroom and in clinical practice.

Study in advance: Your teachers expect a different attitude on your part. Do not wait for the school day to start seeing a theme. Lee before and it will not be so lost that day and explained by your teacher will be easier to digest in your mind. The fact that you like the braces does not mean that you can understand. Take your time to study and draw your own conclusions.

Take notes: No matter what the teacher will give you the information later, or the item or prensentación. Take notes or notes of all kinds. Well, not transcribe the whole class, but the important elements. Sometimes teachers ask them just what happens not in the books, but if they said (and insisted) in the classroom. Hey, why not also share those notes. Review by all if they took the same and if the other captured something that you have passed you. A living together is always a good sign of learning.

Prepare your exams: This is not worth studying a day earlier. I tell you really, I recommend you prepare your exams as quickly and tell your teacher you’re going to have one. Review your books, presentations, articles and notes with sufficient time to take your questions and understand everything. If you are someone who studied with memorization, I wish you the best of luck. If like me you have to understand in order to remember, take your time, believe me you can spare it. You and your fellow graduate can form a club to study for exams, get together a couple of days before the examination and review by all, ask questions, what one does not know what the other knows.

Search Information: Not always going to give you information and adorable your little hands. Put the batteries and researching. Search books, journals, notes and Internet. Hey, here you can find several things orthohacker too (advertisement, je je). Remember that the attitude and habit of research is the day our daily bread of postgraduate programs, particularly in orthodontics.

Invest in books: I know, graduate programs are not cheap, but if this is going to eat, you have to cast fire on the grill. I highly recommend investing in books of orthodontics. These will become true friends of yours and you take out a thousand and one problems, will always be there for you. Let’s be honest, if you read a book to devour Twilight is, you need much help. Devora orthodontic best book, leaving you more for your studies and your life, without rancor Bella.

Prepare your case in advance: As studied in advance is good, also prepare your case to present them with many good days ahead. Doing it day to day does not leave you just one of the worst hardships, along with not sleeping and full of numbers with the cephalometric analysis. Take your time, prepare everything before you start doing it on the computer. Remember that the importance is to cook the patient records in order to give a good diagnosis and thus make the best treatment plan for patients. Do not memorize each cephalometric value, better understand and analyze the altered meaning. Do not give a treatment plan as a recipe says and say that you decide to go that route for the treatment of the patient. That will thank you both teacher and your classmates.
