What is an orthodontist?

Thursday, December 9th, 2010
All orthodontists are dentists first, but only 6% of dentists are orthodontists also. The orthodontist is a specialist in diagnosis, prevention and treatment of facial and dental irregularities. The orthodontist must first attend four years of dental career to graduate as “Dentist.”

Then it must cover a period between two and three years in a residency program in orthodontics. In this post-graduate program, the orthodontist learns the skills required for management of tooth movement (orthodontics) and guide facial development (dentofacial orthopedics or jaw).

At what age can a person have orthodontic treatment?
Children and adults can have the benefit of orthodontic treatment, because healthy teeth can be moved at any age. It is crucial to monitor the growth and development of young children, as some malocclusions may begin to show in the early years of age and can fix them quickly if caught in time.

Recommend that the first review of orthodontist takes place not later than age 7. Wait until the permanent dentition is complete or wait until facial growth is complete, may hinder the correction of most malocclusions.

An orthodontic evaluation can be done at any age if the parents, family dentist or the same patient notice any irregularity.

When left untreated, the majority of orthodontic problems become worse with time malocclusion meet with the orthodontist to correct the problems as they occur, this is less costly and less cumbersome to deal with problems which have become chronic over time .

Orthodontic for Bruxism Patients

Wednesday, September 1st, 2010

Bruxism is a very common dental parafunction. Therefore it is common for adult patients ask “what will happen to me when wearing braces.”

Bruxism interferes not relevant to orthodontics. In fact, more than a third of adult patients we refer to be bruxism.

These patients may have sensitive teeth, something that does not occur when appliances are not kept. This is because the teeth with minimal change of position devices, almost continuously, especially in the early stages of treatment. These small changes in position are recorded by the receivers that can send a pain signal to the nervous system.

In dysfunction syndrome temporomandibular joint sounds are common. Patients are referred to as clicking. They are caused mainly by the interference of the articular disc that is slipped-out of its usual place. Exceptionally, there may be a lock to reduce: the mouth is open or closed for a few minutes, the patient gradually recovered after joint function. Although it may alarm the patient is of no consequence: the articular disc has been filed in the path of the joint in a different way than usual, blocking it temporarily.

Become a Better Student of Orthodontics

Saturday, August 28th, 2010
Many new students will soon begin orthodontic courses (others have already started), many are new expectations of them all, many want to study and learn what for them (and us) is the specialty of their dreams: orthodontics . However sometimes those expectations and dreams are not enough, sometimes you need a radical change of attitude in order to survive (2 or 3 years depending on) the graduate orthodontics. Then I leave a list of 10 points that I would have liked to have had when I started post-graduate students are not more than the accumulation of errors made and analyzed in order to be better, but many times our ego prevents us from seeing potentialized that need to be better have the feet on the ground:Respect your teachers: Never, ever dare to underestimate your teachers in both clinical and other materials. This troglodyte attitude of “if-were-so-good-to-make-class-giving” is nothing more that you enter the road to failure as a student. They are there for love of art, no one is there to become a millionaire, give us their time, expertise, tips and tricks for how to avoid making the same mistakes as them. Pay attention, they forge big part of your approach as an orthodontist. Learn everything you can about them, you will never have the opportunity to have on hand many orthodontists (with different ideas) to be able to question so much as a student. Give them the place they deserve. Remember that when the student is ready then the teacher came.

Respect your peers: Another of the big mistakes as a student, is thinking that the rest of your teammates are not smart enough like you. Never underestimate them, you have no idea the amount of life experiences for all and that they can help your training as an orthodontist. Discusses the advantages that accept your mistakes and thank your partners make you see at the end of account ….

Respect your patients: Our first orthodontic patients are taken in the clinics of the graduate. Thank them and conviction on you, and put all your energy in each of the appointments that you will have with them. Again, each of these dates are a real treasure and discovery experience for you. Respect the time of your patients. Remember that when you come to your clinic schedule leaves all the problems out, your mind must be focused 100% on your patients and in the information your teachers give you. Never, ever dare to show your frustrations in front of them, remember that the trust they give us is hard to win but easy to lose.

Do not stay with any questions: Question everything you do not understand, so why are your teachers. Never be understood if there is any doubt. If you get too much pain to do in class (what if I think my teammates a lot of questions?) As fast and finish the class Ask your teacher. The same both in the classroom and in clinical practice.

Study in advance: Your teachers expect a different attitude on your part. Do not wait for the school day to start seeing a theme. Lee before and it will not be so lost that day and explained by your teacher will be easier to digest in your mind. The fact that you like the braces does not mean that you can understand. Take your time to study and draw your own conclusions.

Take notes: No matter what the teacher will give you the information later, or the item or prensentación. Take notes or notes of all kinds. Well, not transcribe the whole class, but the important elements. Sometimes teachers ask them just what happens not in the books, but if they said (and insisted) in the classroom. Hey, why not also share those notes. Review by all if they took the same and if the other captured something that you have passed you. A living together is always a good sign of learning.

Prepare your exams: This is not worth studying a day earlier. I tell you really, I recommend you prepare your exams as quickly and tell your teacher you’re going to have one. Review your books, presentations, articles and notes with sufficient time to take your questions and understand everything. If you are someone who studied with memorization, I wish you the best of luck. If like me you have to understand in order to remember, take your time, believe me you can spare it. You and your fellow graduate can form a club to study for exams, get together a couple of days before the examination and review by all, ask questions, what one does not know what the other knows.

Search Information: Not always going to give you information and adorable your little hands. Put the batteries and researching. Search books, journals, notes and Internet. Hey, here you can find several things orthohacker too (advertisement, je je). Remember that the attitude and habit of research is the day our daily bread of postgraduate programs, particularly in orthodontics.

Invest in books: I know, graduate programs are not cheap, but if this is going to eat, you have to cast fire on the grill. I highly recommend investing in books of orthodontics. These will become true friends of yours and you take out a thousand and one problems, will always be there for you. Let’s be honest, if you read a book to devour Twilight is, you need much help. Devora orthodontic best book, leaving you more for your studies and your life, without rancor Bella.

Prepare your case in advance: As studied in advance is good, also prepare your case to present them with many good days ahead. Doing it day to day does not leave you just one of the worst hardships, along with not sleeping and full of numbers with the cephalometric analysis. Take your time, prepare everything before you start doing it on the computer. Remember that the importance is to cook the patient records in order to give a good diagnosis and thus make the best treatment plan for patients. Do not memorize each cephalometric value, better understand and analyze the altered meaning. Do not give a treatment plan as a recipe says and say that you decide to go that route for the treatment of the patient. That will thank you both teacher and your classmates.
